At approximately 4:14 p.m., 911 received a call from the Bradley County Jail requesting an ambulance after a male inmate was found unresponsive in his cell. CPR was immediately performed by jail staff. Paramedics reported to the jail shortly after and the inmate was pronounced deceased by the medical examiner. Sheriff Lawson, through District Attorney General Steve Crump, requested for the investigation to be turned over to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.
At this time, the next of kin has been notified. The deceased inmate’s name was Joseph Dewhurst, who was being held on federal charges. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family and friends of Dewhurst, and we ask that anyone hearing this news will take a moment to honor his memory.

The Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) will require fans attending sporting events to wear masks. The organization made the decision during a Board of Control meeting Wednesday.
The mask mandate is just one of the safety measures adopted when the board unanimously passed their new COVID-19 sports regulations.
Schools will be asked to limit fan attendance and mark specific seats to allow for social distancing. Any coaches, players, team personnel, officials and fans must also have their temperature checked before entering a game facility.
In efforts to stop potential spread of the virus, TSSAA has called off any scrimmages, 7-on-7, jamborees, and practices with other teams. If a team experiences a COVID-19 outbreak, TSSAA ruled the healthy team will get the win and the other team receives a no-contest. If it’s during postseason, the team will be eliminated.

The Bradley County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public about recent scam calls where potential victims are told that they are pre-approved for a medical alert system.
The BCSO says the scammers ask for personal information to verify in order to verify eligibility.
The BCSO says anyone who receives this scam call should not provide any personal or banking information, hang up on the caller and block the number.
