Autumn Hughes reports: A request for the Bradley County Road Department to work on a section of Teague Road has been denied.

Meeting Tuesday, the Bradley County Commission’s Road Committee discussed the request and the reasons why the requested work can’t be done.

Commissioner Kevin Raper said he and Commissioner Tim Mason visited the property and saw the area of the road and James Teague’s driveway the property owner considers as being on the right of way. In addition, Road Department representatives have been there twice and also reviewed the records for the property and determined it is not a right of way, making it against the law for the county to work on it, Raper said.

Teague said he has a document — a tax map — from the county showing Teague Road going past his property line, which he said puts the driveway in the right of way. He is asking for about 140 feet of Teague Road to be maintained, adding it has not been for some time.

Road Superintendent Sandra Knight told him if the County Commission approved it, she would maintain the road.

Larry Bowers reports: The condition of city streets was a major topic of discussion at Tuesday evening’s Charleston City Commission meeting, resulting in serious action by commissioners Frankie McCartney and Donna McDermott.

A section of Worth Street, to the north side of Charleston Elementary School, is being closed immediately. The street has been the target of numerous complaints.

Approval of the motion for closure came with agreement from Police Chief Johnny Stokes and Street Supt. Melvin Graham.

The deterioration of Worth, in the central area of the municipality, has been severe.
