The Tennessee Valley Authority says it will eliminate up to 120 jobs in its information technology office in an effort to cut costs and improve performance. A report in the Chattanooga Times Free Press says the agency announced Tuesday that it would outsource about 1 of every 5 jobs in its IT department, starting in the spring. The move would affect employees at the agency’s computer center in the Chattanooga Office Complex and would trim more than $6 million from the local payroll. The agency says it is moving away from writing and developing its own software. The agency says it will provide outplacement assistance to the displaced workers.

An East Tennessee truck driver has been sentenced after traveling to Atlanta to try to sexually exploit someone he thought was an 11-year-old girl.

U.S. Attorney B. J. Pak says 27-year-old Seth Weidemann used the internet to try to exploit a vulnerable child for sexual gratification.

According to Attorney Pak, Weidemann began communicating with an undercover agent on January 16, 2019, thinking he was talking to an 11-year-old girl. The conversations continued for a month. Weidemann sent multiple messages trying to meet with the minor for sex.

On February 14, 2019, Weidemann traveled to the Atlanta area for a planned meeting with the child – and was immediately arrested by FBI agents on the scene.

Weidemann was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Eleanor L. Ross to 17 years in prison, followed by 10 years of supervised release.

Officials say Weidemann had been convicted on October 16, 2019, after he pleaded guilty to one count of attempted coercion and enticement of a minor.
