In news today…

The United States’ three remaining manufacturers of polysilicon, including Wacker in Charleston, thanked President Trump and praised U.S. negotiators for securing the Chinese commitment to purchase U.S. polysilicon in the Phase 1 U.S.-China trade deal,

Polysilicon is the fundamental building block for the semiconductor and solar industries, used to make ingots and wafers for solar cells and the integrated circuits that power everything from smartphones to autonomous vehicles and electronics.

In 2014, China closed its market to U.S. polysilicon by imposing tariffs on imports of U.S-made solar-grade polysilicon. China has heavily subsidized its own polysilicon producers since imposing the tariffs on U.S. producers and has focused on concentrating demand for polysilicon in China. This industrial policy has created massive overcapacity in China, burdening the global industry and worsening conditions for the U.S. polysilicon industry.

While the Phase 1 trade deal includes Chinese purchase commitments of U.S. made solar-grade polysilicon, critical details remain classified by the U.S. government and any benefit will depend further on how China implements the agreement.

Larry Bowers reports: The Charleston City Commission revisited some old complaints and concerns Tuesday evening at the city’s January meeting.

There were lengthy discussions on truck traffic on city streets, annexation, school traffic demands on members of Charleston’s limited police force, and the need for repair (or replacement) of the boat dock and ramp on the Hiwassee River.

The big concern is the struggle of the three officers to adequately handle early-morning and afternoon traffic at Bradley County’s Charleston Elementary School.

There is usually only one officer on duty at these arrival and departure times, and that officer can be severely handicapped if an enforcement situation were to come up during these specific times of the day.

A Cleveland family is hopeful a new set of eyes will help find a mother of two.

Kacey Carter has been missing for more than a year.

A new detective has been assigned to the case and her loved ones hope it will bring her home.

The 26 year old mother of two was last seen in November 2018. She hasn’t been seen or heard from since.

Carter’s husband said he last saw her willingly leave with an unknown Hispanic man in a white VW Jetta, possibly headed to Georgia.

While Carter has been known to leave before, her family said it’s never been for this long.

If you know where Kacey Carter may be or have any information about what happened to her, call Detective Cory Fox at 423-559-3365.

The McMinn County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of two elderly people, a man and a woman, at a home on County Road 203.

According to Sheriff Joe Guy, the man was the caregiver for the woman, who was bed-bound in a chair.

Sheriff Guy says the man apparently passed away in the downstairs a week ago, leaving the woman with no access to a phone due to her immobility.

The woman passed away as well within the past week.
