Three juveniles who are facing aggravated rape and aggravated assault charges will not be returning to Ooltewah High School…that is according to Hamilton County Superintendent Rick
Smith. The juveniles were members of the Ooltewah High School basketball team. Police say the victim is a freshman player.
The incident reportedly happened during the Smoky Mountain Classic Basketball Tournament. The three are being held in the Sevier County Juvenile Facility.
Family members say the victim was treated and released from UT Medical Center in Knoxville, after an eight-day stay.
Superintendent Smith says the charges most definitely warrant a long-term suspension. The offense does fall under the school’s zero tolerance policy which could mean a full year of
suspension at the very least. Meanwhile the Ooltewah team has continued to play its regular schedule and has played in 3 games since the alleged assault.
Polk County (WRCB)
The 13-year old girl aboard the horse-drawn buggy that was struck by a van Tuesday in Polk County has died from injuries she sustained in the crash.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol confirmed the news Wednesday afternoon. Charges against the driver could be upgraded in light of the death.
The THP’s report indicates that the van’s driver was drunk. 28 year old Jason Shelton was traveling at a high rate of speed on Linsdale Road when he struck the buggy.
Shelton continued to drive the van after the crash until it stopped, and then fled on foot. TWRA and deputies were able to capture Shelton, and found him to be intoxicated.
He has eight charges against him including DUI and leaving the scene of a crash with injuries.
Nashville
Tennessee drivers who renew their licenses next year won’t have to go through the process again for eight years.
The Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security says the change from five years includes all classifications of driver licenses and identification licenses.
The change is the result of legislation proposed this year to improve customer traffic flow at driver services centers and takes effect Monday.
