The subject who died after being shot by a Bradley County Sheriff’s Office deputy has been identified as Johnathan Melton, 27, of Charleston.

Due to an officer being involved in the incident, 10th District Attorney General Steve Crump asked the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation to investigate the circumstances of the shooting. TBI has released the man’s identity.

Initial reports indicate the incident began when officers from both the Charleston Police Department and Bradley County Sheriff’s Office responded to a Leyland Drive residence after a reported stabbing. The officers responded just before 1 a.m. Sunday.

Melton reportedly fled the scene on foot, and during a subsequent search of the area, the officers — BCSO Deputy Corey Loftis and the Charleston Police Department’s Jimmy Woody — located the subject behind a church on Hiwassee Street, where they confronted him. The TBI reported that the individual allegedly had weapons in both hands and ignored law enforcement commands, which resulted in officers attempting unsuccessfully to use a stun gun to subdue the subject. The situation further escalated and resulted in the deputy firing his service weapon at the individual, who subsequently died.

Melton was not identified immediately after the incident, as his next-of-kin had not been notified. The Bradley County Sheriff’s Office was familiar with the 27-year-old, as he had served time at the Bradley County Jail, according to BCSO Communications Director Lt. James Bradford.

Tuesday night’s final results in “The Voice” were no big surprise, but no less a huge disappointment for many Cleveland fans pulling for former Lee University student Brooke Simpson.

The eventual winner, Chloe Kohanski, and the show, do have strong connections to the Volunteer State — for the third straight year.

Chloe Kohanski of of Nashville is the winner of 2017’s season 13 of the show, joining Knoxville’s Chris Blue in the winner’s circle from a year ago, and Lee University graduate Jordan Smith in 2015.

Chloe edged out Addison Agen of Fort Wayne, Ind., for this year’s title, after the two advance to the final 2. These two, and Simpson, had dominated most of the competition in recent weeks.

Simpson wound up in third place, with Dickson’s Red Marlow, another Tennessee resident, eliminated Tuesday night in fourth place.

An Alabama inmate who escaped for the second time this year while awaiting trial in the attempted killing of a police officer has been captured in Tennessee.

News outlets report 43-year-old Christopher Kilpatrick was taken into custody in Macon County on Monday morning following a high-speed chase. Authorities say it ended with his stolen truck crashing into another car, sending two people to the hospital.

Macon County Sheriff Mark Gammons says Kilpatrick suffered minor injuries. He told authorities he was on his way to Gatlinburg.

Kilpatrick escaped the Lauderdale County Detention Center on Saturday night. He had previously escaped April 8, and was taken into custody April 15 following a standoff.

Lauderdale County Chief Deputy Richard Richey says Kilpatrick has waived extradition.

He may face charges in Tennessee as well.
