From the Cleveland Daily Banner…

The proceeds of an auction for the only known vehicle to have been signed twice by a U.S. president will now benefit local youth wrestlers.

The highlight of last weekend’s Barrett Jackson auction in West Palm Beach, Florida, turned out to be a white 2009 King Ranch F-150 4X4 pickup autographed twice by President George W. Bush and owned by Allan Jones, the founder and CEO of Check Into Cash.

The event was broadcast nationwide on the Velocity channel, and generated tremendous interest on social media.

Perhaps the biggest news from the sale of the truck was that $65,000 of the proceeds would go to the Community Foundation of Cleveland and Bradley County for the further designated purpose of supporting Cleveland’s Higher Calling Wrestling Club Inc., considered to be one of the nation’s top youth wrestling clubs.

After the auction, Cleveland High School Wrestling Coach and longtime Higher Calling Coach Josh Bosken offered a special thanks to Check into Cash and Jones.

Also from the Banner…

It is looking like teachers in Bradley County Schools will be able to expect at least a 2 percent raise next year.

That was the assessment of Susan Willcutt, the school system’s finance director, as she spoke to the Bradley County Board of Education on Tuesday.

Willcutt gave the board a look at how the budget process is going, and is optimistic teachers will get raises. The question is now about how much they will be.

With some 66 percent of the school system’s funding coming the state government, she explained that will be the biggest determining factor when it comes to looking at higher raises.

Willcutt said the board could potentially see a budget with a 2.5 percent or 3 percent raise for teachers, but that depends on what state funding will be.

The Cleveland Daily Banner reports…

For just over a dozen Cleveland High School seniors and educators, Tuesday night was one to remember, as impressive academic achievements were recognized at the Graduates of Distinction banquet.

Not only were the 14 CHS seniors who maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout all four years of high school honored at the Cleveland Country Club, but they also had the opportunity to thank the educator who had had the greatest positive impact in their lives.

A common thread in the speeches given by the 13 present seniors was how their selected educator had affected their lives on more than an academic level. The students honored their teachers who not only taught them academically, but also in life. Of the 14 teachers to be recognized at the event, a total of 13 teach at the high school.

And finally, a bizzare story from the Chattanooga Times Free Press…

A plumber in Bradley County found a live grenade forgotten in the crawl space of a home he was working under Wednesday afternoon on Old Chattanooga Pike.

The plumber called 911 when he found the grenade in the dirt and responding deputies with the Bradley County Sheriff’s Office brought in a bomb technician from the Cleveland Police Department to handle the situation according to BCSO spokesman James Bradford.

The technician was able to safely remove the grenade and has since taken it to a secure location to dispose of it.

It was unclear how or why the weapon was left underneath the home, but Bradford said there used to be two veterans who lived in the home but are now deceased.

“It’s been there for quite some time,” Bradford said.
