Topping our news today…

More than 1000 Bradley Countians voted on the first day of early voting. The Bradley County Election Commission reports that 1,016 people voted at one of the three early voting sites Wednesday. The actual total with nursing home and mail in votes is 1,104. That number is up from the previous similar election in 2014, which saw 825 people vote on the first day of early voting. Early voting continues Monday through Saturday through April 26. Early voting sites are the Bradley County Election Commission office, Bradley Square Mall, and Food City on McGrady Drive.

From the Cleveland Daily Banner…

A 21-year-old Cleveland man was killed early Sunday morning when his vehicle left a Bradley County road and struck a tree.

According to Tennessee Highway Patrol spokesperson Lt. John Harmon, Jarreth Milling, 21, was traveling west on Harrison Pike at around 4:26 a.m. Sunday.

The THP report said Milling was negotiating a curve to the right when his 2013 Chevrolet veered off to the left, striking a tree head-on. Milling’s vehicle came to rest at the tree and he succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

Harmon reported Milling was not wearing a seat belt. As is routine in these cases, drug and alcohol testing has been requested.

Fire crews are investigating after a house fire in Athens sent two people to the hospital and injured a firefighter Wednesday night.

The Athens Fire Department responded to a fire at 721 East Madison Avenue.

Athens fire chief Jim Dyer told us two people living in the home were severely burned, and a firefighter received head injuries while trying to pull the victims from the home.

The two people living in the home were hospitalized, and Dyer says the firefighter was taken to a local facility. We do not know the present condition of either the residents or the firefighter.

Dyer says the fire was located on the inside in the front of the home. It is considered a total loss.

State fire marshals are on the way to the scene. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

From the Chattanooga Times Free Press…

Tennesseans will be able to buy bottles of wine and liquor on Sundays under just-passed legislation, with Gov. Bill Haslam expected to sign the measure.

The state Senate gave final approval Wednesday to the legislation, which narrowly passed the chamber in a 17-11 vote, the bare minimum number of votes needed for approval. The House passed the measure by a broader margin earlier in the week.

Haslam expects to sign the bill into law, pending a customary review of its final language. It will legalize sales of bottled wine on Sundays and most major holidays in grocery stores beginning January 1st.

But for package stores, the effects will be immediate. Their customers will be able to purchase wine and liquor immediately upon the bill becoming law under a compromise intended to give the small business owners a head start. Sunday and holiday sales hours would be from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m., matching the current restraints on beer.
