Two incidents at the Bradley County Jail have resulted in sewage backing up into the building.
According to Brian Graves, public information officer for the Bradley County Sheriff’s Office, the incidents occurred Thursday night and Sunday night, but issues are ongoing.
“Inmates stopped up toilets, causing a sewer backup,” Graves said. “Sanitation crews worked both of those nights cleaning and disinfecting the areas which were contaminated.”
Graves added there have been problems with the mulcher which helps to dispose of that waste; “therefore it has taken more time than usual to clean up the problem.”
“The inmates themselves are to blame,” said BCSO Corrections Capt. Gabe Thomas. “It was their actions which caused this.”
In addition, the jail’s commissary has been closed at the request of the sanitation crew because of those sewer backups.

Local nonprofit organization The Caring Place is asking for the community’s help as it prepares for its “Summer Doesn’t Take a Vacation Community Food Drive.”
On Monday, July 30, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., the organization is asking the community to stop by the organization’s location at 130 Wildwood Ave. S.E., to donate nonperishable food. Volunteers will be on hand to help unload people’s cars.
The Caring Place provides a variety of services to families in need, including social work services and the chance to receive free clothing. However, food remains the organization’s most popular offering.
The Caring Place is accepting all types of in-date, nonperishable food during the upcoming drive — everything from canned fruit, vegetables and soups to boxes of cereal. Freeman said “kid-friendly” items like macaroni and cheese, pasta and pasta sauce, peanut butter and jelly and condiments like ketchup are always in demand.
Those who cannot donate next Monday can do so at any time during regular business hours or at special barrels at local businesses such as Jenkin’s Deli and Whirlpool.

A spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the Middle District of Tennessee, confirms an indictment against a man for threatening to murder Congresswoman and Governor candidate Diane Black.
A spokesperson for Black’s campaign provided a copy of the indictment.
The indictment says Clifton Ward threatened to assault and murder Congresswoman Black.
The indictment was filed in the United States District Court.
