As we reported last week, the 113th Tennessee General Assembly convened on Tuesday. The first week of the session is the ‘organization session’, meaning that the last week does not count against the 90 legislative days the Constitution allows for each assembly. During the first week, lawmakers are sworn in, speakers are elected, the constitutional officers are elected, and committee assignments are appointed.

Here are the committee assignments for our local legislators:

Representative Dan Howell, representing District 22, was appointed to serve as the Chairman of the Transportation Committee, Chairman of the Fiscal Review Committee (which is a joint Committee of the House and Senate), he will also serve as a member of the Criminal Justice Committee, the Calendar and Rules Committee, as well as the Transportation and Criminal Justice Sub Committees.

Representative Kevin Raper from House District 24, will serve as the Vice Chairman of the Education Instruction Committee, and a member of the Local Government Committee, Education Instruction Sub Committee, and the Property and Planning Subcommittee.

District 1 Senator, J. Adam Lowe, was appointed as the 2nd Vice Chair of the Energy, Agriculture, and Natural Resources Committee, and will serve as a member of the State and Local Government Committee and the Government Operations Committee.

Also last week, Cameron Sexton was reelected as Speaker of the House and Randy McNally was reelected as Speaker of the Senate and Lieutenant Governor.

The General Assembly will reconvene on Jan. 20 and 21 in a joint session for the inauguration of Governor Bill Lee.
