From Local 3 News: UPDATE: The Chattanooga Police Department says suspect John Schultz attempted to shoot multiple co-workers, but the weapon misfired and did not discharge.

 

Police say 67-year-old Schultz was an employee of the Chattanooga-Hamilton County Air Pollution Control Bureau.

 

A witness observed Schultz pointing a gun at multiple employees and pulling the trigger on Monday, when the firearm malfunctioned.

 

Police say other employees separated themselves and got away from the suspect. Schultz then shot himself with a second firearm.

 

Police were first called around 2:00pm on reports of an active shooter at a CBL building, near Hamilton Place Mall. Callers were reporting that a person with a gun was firing shots inside the building.

 

Law enforcement on the scene began searching the building for a suspect based on descriptions from individuals inside the building.

 

Schultz was located with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was detained and later found to be deceased.

 

No victims were found.

 

UPDATE: Chattanooga police confirm the shooting suspect fatally shot himself.

 

During a press conference, police say the shooter attempted to execute a plan which failed, ending with him shooting himself.

 

There were no other persons shot or injured, other than the shooter.

 

Hamilton Place Mall and all surrounding businesses will be resuming operations after the lockdown.

 

Police say there is no evidence that the shooter ever left the building before shooting himself.

 

As the investigation continues, they ask everyone to avoid the area if possible.

Chattanooga police say they are at 2034 Hamilton Place Blvd., an office building located near Marshalls and Santi’s Mexican Grill.
