Topping our news today…

No criminal charges will be filed after a man was hit and killed on North Lee Highway in Bradley County.

Jesse Lee Burchett, age 29, of Chattanooga, TN was fatally struck in the 7700 block of North Lee Hwy.

After completing the investigation, the Public Safety Unit will not seek criminal charges or cite the driver for any violations surrounding the accident which concluded the pedestrian was inside the traffic lane in a very dark area. It was determined the pedestrian was walking southbound in the northbound travel lane, and was fatally struck by the vehicle that was traveling northbound.

Tennessee Highway Patrol assisted the Public Safety Unit while reconstructing the scene, which led to North Lee Highway being briefly shutdown by Tennessee Department of Transportation.

From the Chattanoogan…

From the Cleveland Daily Banner…

From Oct. 9 to Oct. 12, the Tennessee Highway Safety Office  and the Tennessee Highway Patrol partnered with local law enforcement for Tennessee’s second statewide bus tour to crack down on distracted driving.

The THP provided two large, black and tan buses marked with THP logos to transport law enforcement as they observed motorists for traffic violations.

Officers representing various agencies riding the THP bus communicated with ground units after observing traffic violations to initiate the execution of enforcement action. Each district conducted approximately two hours of enforcement.

During the tour, law enforcement officers issued a total of 905 citations statewide.  The total citations include additional violations discovered during the traffic stops.

The first event in the City of Cleveland’s 175th anniversary celebration is just days away.

Several local, state and national dignitaries will be in Cleveland over the next three weeks for celebrations recognizing the city’s birthday.

Cleveland was founded as the county seat of Bradley County in 1842. The 175th anniversary was recorded back in February, but city authorities decided to celebrate the anniversary this fall for a more comfortable time (weather-wise).

There will be a community picnic (ice cream and cake social) for all Cleveland residents from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday afternoon, Nov. 5.

The celebratory dinner Friday evening is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Lee University’s Communication Arts Building on North Ocoee in downtown Cleveland. The concert will be across the street in Pangle Hall.

Tickets are required for the concert. They should be picked up as soon as possible, since seating is limited to 800. They are available at the Cleveland Daily Banner, Bank of Cleveland, the City of Cleveland Municipal Building, and the Cleveland/Bradley County Chamber of Commerce.
