Our top story, from the Chattanooga Times Free Press…

Authorities have identified Larry Jeffries, 52, and Jeremy walker, 27, as the two men who were found deceased in a home in Polk County on Friday.

The scene was on the 100 block of Amber Way in Old Fort, Tenn., and both men are from that town.

The case remains active and the investigation is being led by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, according to a news release.

Investigators have also located a black 2016 Toyota Rav4 in Charleston, Tenn., that authorities believe may have evidentiary value in determining the circumstances of the two deaths.

TBI joined the investigation at the request of 10th Judicial District Attorney General Stephen Crump.

Anyone with information about the case should contact the TBI at 1-800-TBI-FIND.

The Cleveland Fire Department and the Cleveland Police Department responded to 905 Sunset Avenue at 3:02 p.m. Sunday in reference to smoke coming from a residence. There was no visible fire from the exterior of the residence.  A family member allowed firemen access into the home when they entered and discovered a 72 yr old female deceased.

We will have more on this story as details become available.

From the Chattanoogan…

The Bradley County Commission on Monday is to consider a resolution opposing a gas or diesel tax increase in Tennessee.

The measure says Tennessee has a $2 billion surplus.

It says any increase would be “a further tax burden on Bradley County residents that can least afford  the additional tax burden.”

The panel is also to consider moving to a four-year reappraisal cycle.

A sales ratio study is to be conducted during the second year of the reappraisal cycle.

The new cycle would start July 1 and result in a reappraisal of all properties for the tax year 2021.

From the Cleveland Daily Banner…

It appears Cleveland State Community College is in position to see an influx of state funds for capital improvements in 2018.

That was the word given by three of Bradley County’s representatives in the state Legislature during a recent meeting of the Cleveland/Bradley Chamber of Commerce’s Public Affairs Committee.

Cleveland State already had the good news late last year when the Tennessee Board of Regents included the college’s $48.7 million for the campus in its capital outlay list.

The capital outlay funding would also provide for much-needed renovation of existing classrooms.

Inclusion on the list does not guarantee funding. Seymour said the list would have to be approved and funded by the Tennessee Legislature before being definite.

CSCC President Dr. Bill Seymour mentioned the college’s opportunity for the $43 million in capital projects.

Seymour noted the college “is not used to asking the community for those kinds of funds.”

He added the local legislative delegation has done a great job of “communicating our needs.”
