From the Cleveland Daily Banner…

Wendy Rudolph and David Montgomery will be joining the other inductees April 14 for the Cleveland Parks and Recreation Department’s Old Timers Hall of Fame event.

Wendy Rudolph grew up in Somerville, N.J., Rudolph always wanted to play basketball on her school team; however, her religious beliefs didn’t allow her to participate in school athletics. She finally got the chance to play basketball during her junior year in high school after moving to Cleveland. After graduating from Cleveland High School, she went to Lee University and played ball for three different coaches. She was named MVP in every tournament her senior year. Other accomplishments while at Lee were the winning of the 1985 NCCAA national championship, being named MVP in the NCCAA national championship 1985, and being the first female to have her Jersey (No. 21) retired.

David Montgomery started his basketball career at Valley View Elementary in 1959. Montgomery was on the Bradley Central High School basketball team from 1961-65, coached by Bill Walker. His sophomore year he played on the B-team coached by his brother, LeBron Montgomery. This team earned a record of 19-1 with the starting five of Jimmy Cannon, Wayne Richardson, Artie Ellis, Ernest “Porky” Herron and Montgomery. During his senior year Terry Scott, the first black at player at Bradley, joined the starting five. Montgomery averaged 9 point per game his senior year. He received the Male Athlete of the Year award at graduation. Since Montgomery was not recruited by any colleges, he walked on at Lee College in 1965. He started as a freshman, under the leadership of Dale Hughes, and averaged 15.9 points a game. Montgomery was inducted into the Lee University Hall of Fame in 1998. He held the career scoring record for 27 years with 2,010 points.

The inductees will be recognized at a banquet at the Museum Center at Five Points.

The banquet will begin at 6 p.m. April 14. Tickets, which are $25 each, must be purchased by April 12. Visit the City Parks and Recreation or call 479-4129.
