Topping our news today…

At 4:08AM Sunday morning, Bradley County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to reports of a gunshot at 3515 Bates Pike SE. Upon arrival, a male victim was found deceased.

A person of interest, as well as several witnesses, were interviewed. A search warrant was obtained and investigators processed the scene inside the residence Sunday morning.

As a result of the investigation, Matthew L. Wolfcale, age 25, has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder in relation to the deadly shooting.

Bates Pike was temporarily closed in the area of the incident for a period of time Sunday while authorities conducted their investigation.

Mr. Wolfcale is currently in custody in the Bradley County Jail.

As of news time, no further information was available. More details are anticipated to be released today pending notification of the victim’s family.

The expansion of the Hiwassee River Heritage Center and the National Historic Trail Experience in Charleston will officially open to the public on March 30, 1 p.m. – 5 p.m. A ribbon cutting with donors and supporters is slated for the day before. Saturday’s open house will feature booths from area historic sites and organizations as well as four featured speakers throughout the event.

Speakers for Saturday include Troy Wayne Poteete, executive director of the National Trail of Tears Association, Jim Ogden, staff historian for Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, Joe Guy, historian and sheriff of McMinn County, and Laura Bryan Spann, Calhoun native and researcher specializing in family stories. The speakers will present in theheritage center’s newly added Carl E. Colloms Education Room.

Tim Siniard reports: An amended bill co-sponsored by Sen. Todd Gardenhire (R-Chattanooga) and Rep. Dan Howell (R-Georgetown) aimed at helping develop the former Whirlpool property in Cleveland will be up for a vote next week in the Tennessee Senate’s State and Local Committee next week.

The Senate State and Local Committee on Wednesday adopted Gardenhire’s amendment, which the body’s full committee will consider Tuesday.

A companion bill in the Tennessee House of Representatives will go before the House’s Local Government Full Committee on Wednesday. If passed, it will then advance to the House floor.

The amendment removes the required designation of county size and minimum acreage requirements, expands the definition of a “qualified cost” for which certain tax revenues may be utilized and expands the designation which must be obtained in order to qualify as a redevelopment zone.

Tim Siniard reports: During the Cleveland Utilities Board meeting Friday, board member Chari Buckner said the Tennessee Valley Authority’s 1.5 percent rate increase is becoming a habit.

Buckner made her comment prior to the board’s vote to approve the utility’s fiscal 2020 budget.

CU’s budget will include a 1.5 percent rate increase for its electric division, a 5 percent rate increase for its water division and a 4 percent sewer rate increase.

The rate increases for residential electric water and sewer services will be $2, $1.12 and $1.60 per month, respectively.

The electric rate increase will be in addition to a TVA charge passed on to CU customers and listed as a $2 grid access charge.

The water rate has an additional monthly charge from Hiwassee Utility District that is passed on to CU customers.

Chattanooga-Hamilton County Health Department officials say an employee of the Western Sizzlin restaurant has been diagnosed with acute hepatitis A and urging customers to get vaccinated.

Officials say the employee worked at the restaurant on Relocation Way while contagious from March 10th -20th.

Officials are urging people who ate the restaurant during those dates should get the hepatitis A vaccine as soon as possible and say, “additional protective measures, such as immune globulin injections, may be recommended for certain people.”
