Tim Siniard reports: A North Cleveland Towers resident has expressed concern regarding a planned permanent closure of Magnolia Avenue N.E., near Lee University. According to the Cleveland City Council’s agenda for Monday, council members will vote on the ordinance under new business. The proposed ordinance, which was approved 8-0 by the Cleveland Municipal Planning Commission last week, is as follows:
“Abandoning a section of Magnolia Avenue N.E. located between Billy Graham Avenue N.E. and 13th Street N.E. and a section of 13th Street N.E. between Parker Street N.E. and Magnolia Avenue N.E.”
The council’s final vote is scheduled for July 13.
The section to be closed runs through a portion of Lee University’s campus, where the Helen DeVos College of Education and Atkins-Ellis Hall are located on the west side and the Mayfield Annex, formerly Mayfield Elementary School, are located on the east side.
City Manager Joe Fivas could not be reached for comment as of press time Saturday.
The resident said she was alarmed when a sign recently appeared on the corner of each end of Magnolia Avenue advising the city council’s hearing. She said the street regularly accommodates the exit of emergency vehicles from North Cleveland Towers, which is a senior retirement building with more than 100 residents.

The Rhea County Fire Department responded to a reported fire at the Huber plant Sunday, according to the City of Graysville Volunteer Fire Department.
The City of Graysville Volunteer Fire Department said firefighters believe the fire has been put out but would remain on the scene to find hot spots.

A man was arrested for spray painting “Black Lives Matter” on a Cleveland home, a spokesman with the Bradley County Sheriff’s Office confirmed to Channel 3.
BCSO Public Information Officer Taylor Woodruff said Donald Garner was arrested on charges of vandalism over $1,000 after spray painting on a residence located on 6th Street NE.
The arrest was made on June 19.
