Steven Ray Handy, 49, was identified Saturday as the man shot during an interaction Friday evening with Bradley County Sheriff’s Office deputies.
Handy was transported to a Chattanooga-area hospital for treatment of injuries that were described as not life-threatening. No further information regarding his condition has been released.
No law enforcement officers were injured in the incident, according to a Saturday news release from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.
The TBI was called in to investigate the officer-involved shooting by 10th District Attorney General Stephen Crump.
The incident began just before 8:30 p.m. Friday when BCSO deputies responded to a location in the 1200 block of Chilcutt Road in Charleston, Tennessee, according to the release. There, deputies encountered Handy, who had reportedly made threats to harm himself earlier in the day.
“As deputies were speaking with Handy in an effort to get him to surrender, he produced a weapon,” the release reads. “Deputies fired shots, striking Handy in the leg.”
TBI agents are continuing the gather evidence and interview witnesses regarding the incident in support of the ongoing investigation.

Gov. Bill Lee has reappointed Dakasha Winton, senior vice president and chief government relations officer for Chattanooga-based BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee, as a member of the Tennessee Higher Education Commission.
Winton is one of nearly 200 people appointed by Lee to dozens of state boards and commissions, including a number of people from the Chattanooga area.
Cleveland Mayor Kevin Brooks, a former Tennessee legislator, was appointed to the State Workforce Development Board as a representative of the state’s mayors. The board provides leadership and guidance to state workforce development officials on boosting a skilled workforce.

Tim Siniard reports: Erlanger Health System is coming to Cleveland.
The medical care provider is planning to open two medical facilities in Cleveland, with the goal of facilitating greater access to medical care in the community.
According to Erlanger Health System Senior Vice President and CSO Matt Gibson, the medical care provider will open an ambulatory care facility, as well as a primary care facility in the upcoming months.
Gibson said the ambulatory care center will include an urgent care center, primary care clinic, specialty clinics, a pediatrics clinic, and a physical therapy clinic.
The urgent and primary care ambulatory facility will be located across from Longhorn Restaurant on Holiday Inn Express Way N.W., off Paul Huff Parkway.
It is expected to open by the second week of November.
The primary care facility, opening in February, will be located at Village Green Town Center on Keith Street, where a former bank building currently stands vacant.
Erlanger’s 3,000-square-foot facility at Village Green Town Center on Keith Street will replace the current structure at the site, which will be demolished.

The meeting will include a public hearing where people can voice their opinion about the proposed tax increase, which will be voted on at the Commission meeting next Monday.
