From WRCB Channel 3…

The Vice President was at Lee University Saturday as part of a campaign event for Congresswoman Marsha Blackburn. Blackburn is running for Bob Corker’s Senate seat.

Hundreds of people packed Pangle Hall to listen to Vice President Mike Pence speak. People started lining up nearly 5 hours before the event to get a seat.

Before the Vice President’s arrival, a panel discussed the recent tax reform.

Representative Scott DesJarlais, Representative Chuck Fleischmann and business owner Daniel LeVan talked about the initiative and said it’s helped Tennessee’s economy.

Pence urged voters to remember the importance of keeping Republicans in office in the upcoming election, especially keeping control of the Senate. Pence endorsed Marsha Blackburn for Tennessee’s U.S senate seat.

The United Way of the Ocoee Region kicked off its 2019 campaign Friday afternoon, at the conclusion of its annual Day of Action. The event was hosted by Whirlpool.

Volunteers who were grateful to have completed a morning of work to benefit United Way partner agencies – with most volunteering outside in high temperatures and humidity – received a motivational and heartwarming message from the kick-off’s guest speaker, Kelly Wells.

Taking the stage, Kelly Wells said “our United Way has been working behind the scenes in our community for 80 years” and “today has made a huge impact for the good in our community.” She also shared  she is a recipient of United Way partner agency services.

Wells said in leaving an unhappy marriage she and her two young children “ended up at Harbor Safe House,” where she and her son slept on the bottom mattress of a bunk bed and her daughter slept in a crib. They lived there for a few months during which time she received other United Way partner agency services.

She said she has seen the impact the United Way has made in the lives of others, like through The Caring Place’s Sac Pac Program that provides take-home food to children.

Wells thanked the United Way donors and said she appreciates the opportunity “to put a face to the dollar” donated to the United Way. Now happily remarried,  she and her husband are excited to give back to the United Way.

Madison Dochety of Tullahoma has won the title of Distinguished Young Woman of Tennessee for 2019, beating out 19 other contestants from across the state.

Dochety received this honor during the state competition’s finals held at Lee University’s Dixon Center auditorium Saturday night.

The first alternate was Kennedy Street of Cumberland Valley, while Alyssa Champagne of Gatlinburg was named the second alternate.

The theme of this year’s state program was “Be-You-tiful,” and the girls celebrated this message of self-acceptance during their performances in Friday night’s Preliminary and Saturday night’s Final.

Distinguished Young Women, which was known as Junior Miss until 2010, is a scholarship program for high school girls.

Dochety will spend the next year with the state title, before heading to nationals next June for the chance to be named Distinguished Young Woman of America for 2019.

This was the ninth year the city of Cleveland has played host to the state-level DYW program.
