From the Cleveland Daily Banner…

Friday morning was cold and gray, but the hearts of Cleveland and Bradley County proved to be warm with compassion and generosity.

WCLE wrapped up its annual two-week fundraiser for the Empty Stocking Fund with a record-shattering $84,536 when the broadcast ended.

The funds go each year to host a Christmas party for more than 1,000 children who otherwise may not have the Christmas experience of most other children.

The radio drive was founded 42 years ago by then-station owner Tom Rowland and current owner/host Steve Hartline picked up the baton to continue something his late grandfather, the Rev. M.E. Littlefield started.

One of the highlights of this year’s drive was Thursday night’s “lock-in” pitting Hartline and the Chick-Fil-A Cow in a contest to see which could get the most donations and be released from the Bradley County Sheriff’s Office’s Christmas float which featured a fake jail cell.

Friends and passersby gave the radio host a hard time by dropping money off in support of the cow, forcing Hartline to remain in the cell for the entire two-hours of the event.

Donations can still be made by visiting the website at www.emptystocking.org.

Also from The Banner…

Customers of Cleveland Utilities will receive a small (negative) gift during this holiday month with an increase in their electric rate.

Financial Manager Marshall Stinnett reported to the public utility’s board of directors last week there will be a rate increase of 2.53 percent in December, bringing the rate to 9.364 cents per kilowatt hour.

For the month of November, the rate was 9.133 cents per kilowatt hour.

As a continued trend of the city’s public utility, the Tennessee Valley Authority’s fuel cost adjustment is being passed on to CU customers as a rate adjustment.

From NewsChannel 9…

A Bradley County school building is in shambles after a car crashes into it.

The building is an annex, housing the school’s “technology department” as well as some other special services.

No one was inside when the driver of the car lost control and drove through Scott Webb’s office.

Webb says it’s not often you get a call that says you have a car in your office.

Cleveland Police said the driver of the car injured his left leg.

The damage to Webb’s office is extensive, but he says it is all just stuff that can be fixed. It’s unclear how long the repairs will take, but he is expecting to complete them over the upcoming Christmas break.

Cleveland Police said the driver will not be charged.
