Topping our news today…

A man who assaulted Sheriff Eric Watson has plead guilty in court. During an appearance in Bradley County Criminal Court, Gregory Mathis Jr. pled guilty in front of Judge Andrew Freiberg to four charges and received concurrent jail sentences for all four charges. The charges were: Assault – Strangulation, with a sentence of three years; assault – bodily injury, with a sentence of 11 months and 29 days; domestic assault, with a sentence of 11 months and 29 days; and assault – offensive or provocative contact, with a sentence of 6 months. As these sentences will run concurrently, the maximum time Mr. Mathis will spend in custody is three years.

Mathis was arrested in April 28, 2016 after assaulting Sheriff Eric Watson when intervening during a physical altercation in the Sonic parking lot between Mathis and his girlfriend.

From the Cleveland Daily Banner…

An ongoing sewer line project by Cleveland Utilities will require the closing of a section of Mouse Creek Road north of Paul Huff Parkway from 7 p.m. this evening  to 7 a.m. Tuesday morning.

The north side of Mouse Creek Road will be closed at the intersection of Paul Huff Parkway and just west of Robin Hood Drive N.W. on Monday, April 10, beginning at 7 p.m. until 7 a.m. on Tuesday, April 11, for construction work. Westbound traffic on Paul Huff Parkway will be able to make right-hand turns onto Mouse Creek Road and continue northbound. However, vehicles traveling eastbound on Paul Huff Parkway, and those coming straight across Mouse Creek Road, will be detoured to Freedom Parkway (adjacent to IHOP) and may turn left onto Mohawk to return to Mouse Creek Road. The southbound traffic on Mouse Creek Road will be similarly detoured eastward on Mohawk and may turn right onto Freedom Parkway to return to Paul Huff Parkway.

“We understand there have been traffic delays during the project and apologize for any inconvenience this may have presented,” Greg Clark, Cleveland Utilities manager of Wastewater Collections said. “It is anticipated the project will be completed in the next two weeks, and traffic patterns should return to normal conditions.”

Clark added, “Cleveland Utilities greatly appreciates the community’s patience and understanding as we work to complete the force main replacement project.”

Also from the Banner…

Hundreds of Bradley County residents took advantage of properly disposing hazardous materials on Saturday morning at the Bradley County Justice Center.

The Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day was coordinated by Santek Inc., Keep America Beautiful, Bradley County and the Bradley County Sheriff’s Office. Organizers said it was a success.

“We had 490 households bring items to this event and that is great,” said Cheryl Dunson of Santek. The flow of traffic at the justice center “was steady through the whole morning.”

This is the first of two Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day events held during the calendar year. The next event will be held in October or November.

And finally, the Cleveland Daily Banner Reports…

The Airport Authority was pleased with the low bid received last month for the runway extension at the Cleveland Jetport. The authority approved the bid at a Friday morning session at the municipal building.

It is hoped construction of the runway extension can begin as soon as possible, hopefully by the first of May. It is anticipated it will take approximately 120 days (four months) to complete the project.

Use of the 700-foot extension, and the full 6,200-foot runway, will be delayed until state and federal authorities can approved the approach settings for the runway. The extension will also require an update of runway and jetport markings.
