A Polk County man faces charges after authorities say he burned about 1 to 1.5 acres near his home.

Last Saturday, the West Polk County Fire Department was sent to a brush fire in the area of 373 Casson Road.

The first firefighters to arrive reported back that a man was threatening to get a gun to prevent them from putting out the fire.

Deputies made contact with Timothy Casson through a closed door, and the Polk County Sheriff’s Office says he refused to come out of the house, and showed them a lighter before walking away.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office report says deputies noticed “some type of wet substance on the porch that smelled of lighter fluid or similar flammable liquid.

With flames nearing the home, and, according to the report, “due to Casson’s mental illness,” deputies busted open the rear door of the residence and arrested Casson.

The report says Casson would not speak about the fire outside his home. It also says deputies noticed several burns in the floor where it appears he tried to set fire to it in the past.

Casson is now charged with arson.
