Tennessee Health Commissioner Dr. Lisa Piercey says the state is on track to make every adult resident eligible for a COVID-19 vaccine before the federal deadline of May 1st.

Dr. Piercey says it’s a balancing act of when to move on to the next phase in eligibility and one of those factors is demand. She says right now, more than 1.3 million Tennesseans or about 17.5% of the population have received at least one dose of the vaccine.

The commissioner said uptake is one thing putting the state at the bottom of vaccine distribution in the country.

That means hundreds of thousands of vaccines are open right now with rural Tennessee health departments – and many are going unfilled.

Piercey says right now, in East Tennessee, 50% of appointments at rural health departments are left open.

Tennessee Department of Health officials say they are developing a strategy to accelerate through phases of the vaccination plan while balancing vaccine supply and demand.
