Bradley County Schools is pleased to announce three new assistant principal positions. Dr. Candy Wiggins will assume the STEM Academy Principal role at Bradley Central High School, Chris Doan will be welcomed as a new AP at Ocoee Middle School and John Burroughs will be the new Freshman Academy Principal at Walker Valley High School.
Principal Patrick Spangler of Bradley Central High School is excited to add the educational experience and passion of Dr. Candy Wiggins to his administrative team. Dr. Wiggins has been in education for over 28 years. She has exhibited excellence in the classroom, success in instructional leadership, and strong collaboration throughout her time in Bradley County Schools.
Mr. John Burroughs has been named as the Freshman Academy Principal at Walker Valley High School. John Burroughs comes to Bradley County Schools after serving 24 years in McMinn County.
The Assistant Principals will assume their respective duties on July 1st.
The annual Riverbend Festival in Chattanooga will be delayed for a second time and will return in 2022, according to a release from Friends of the Festival on Tuesday.
A news release from Friends of the Festival stated: The board of Friends of the Festival met recently for their regularly scheduled meeting and discussed the timing of the 39th anniversary of the region’s much-loved music festival. The organization explored a fall date for the festival; however, for several reasons, the Board made the decision to return to its’ traditional date of June 2-5, 2022.
Music fans wanting to get their taste of Riverbend are invited to come to Ross’s Landing every Saturday evening at 7 p.m. throughout June the last two weeks of July and all of August. The traditional summer music series is in its 13th year and features well-known bands, local foods and beverages from throughout the area.

Dr. Russell Dyer, Director of Cleveland City Schools, is thrilled to announce that the Tennessee Department of Education has selected Sheron Smith as one of nine finalists for 2021-2022 Tennessee Teacher of the Year. Ms. Smith is a second grade teacher at Arnold Memorial Elementary School and has recently completed her seventeenth year at the school.
Grand Division winners and, ultimately, the Tennessee Teacher of the Year will be selected from this group of finalists and announced during an honorary celebration this fall following a panel interview with each finalist. The final winner will represent Tennessee in the National Teacher of the Year competition and serve as an ambassador for education in the state throughout the 2021-22 school year. Finalists will also have the opportunity to serve on Commissioner Schwinn’s Teacher Advisory Council for the duration of the 2021-22 school year. The council is composed of expert teachers who provide feedback and inform the work of the department throughout the academic year.
