Eighteen Bradley County students who placed first or second in their categories at this year’s Tennessee History Day contest will represent Tennessee at the National History Day competition beginning June 12.

After competing in regional contests across the state, 241 students advanced to this year’s Tennessee History Day competition, held the first two weeks of April. At Tennessee History Day, 102 students representing 26 schools in 12 counties earned recognition. Ninety-three students earned first, second and third place medals, 23 students were awarded special prizes and two educators were recognized as Educators of the Year.

Secretary of State Tre Hargett wishes to congratulate every student who participated in this year’s Tennessee History Day competition and to the 61 students who are advancing to compete at National History Day. 

History Day is a year-long competition in which students in grades 6-12 compete by submitting group or individual projects about people and events of historical significance

Anna Shand reports: The inaugural cohort of Bradley County Jail inmates, including Jordan Brown, Brandon Revelle and Terry Holmes, received their HVAC EPA 608 certifications on Tuesday. 

In a joint effort, City Fields, the Bradley County Justice Center and Cleveland State Community College have been able to provide these inmates with technical training before their release. City Fields and the American Job Center provided scholarships for the students. 

The students completed the 80-hour heating, ventilation and air conditioning training with instructor Jason Taylor via lecture and hands-on lab time using Cleveland State equipment.  

Jean Casseus, of the Bradley County Justice Center, drove the three students to class every morning. During the ceremony, Casseus thanked the students for their courage and determination.

A Johnson City, Tennessee man accused of killing his girlfriend has been arrested.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) says Bradley Miller was captured in Ashland, Kentucky late Monday.

This was after the body of 48-year-old Athena Saunders was found last month off a gravel road near the Unaka Mountain Beauty Spot, WCYB reports.

Miller’s charges include first-degree murder, abuse of a corpse and tampering with evidence.
