Cleveland High School is aware of a threat that has been posted to social media. The school has been in contact with the Cleveland Police Department, who is now investigating this matter. CHS will follow their school safety plan and will work closely with the Cleveland Police Department to investigate this matter and to keep the school safe. The safety and well-being of students and staff is top priority.

Around 12:45AM Monday morning, the Bradley County Sheriff’s Office responded to a reported gunshot at a residence on Hancock Road NE.

Upon arrival, the mother advised her 2-year-old child had suffered an accidental gunshot wound.

The child was immediately transported to a local hospital with a gunshot wound to the chest and later passed away.

The Bradley County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division detectives responded to the scene and conducted a preliminary investigation. It was then discovered that the firearm had been left unsecured and the child was able to gain access to it.

After consulting with the District Attorney’s Office, the father, Matthew Daniel Jenkins, has been charged with Criminally Negligent Homicide.

Please understand that this is a heartbreaking tragedy. We send our deepest condolences and ask that you respect the privacy of the child’s family, friends, and loved ones while they grieve the loss of their child.

Cleveland State Community College is inviting the community to the campus to enjoy the spooky holiday spirit of the college’s second Halloween on Wheels. Saturday, October 30th, the community can enjoy a drive thru experience where families can bring their kids and trick or treat in a safe environment while seeing the campus and learning about CSCC’s academic programs.

Each vehicle will receive a folder with a scavenger hunt sheet they can solve while driving through the event. At the end of the drive, they can turn in their sheet for prize drawings. Each car will also get a goodie bag full of information about the many programs the college provides.

All candy provided is sponsored by MARS Wrigley. Costumes are encouraged for anyone in the Halloween spirit. Guests can also stop at the end of the scavenger hunt and exit their vehicles to take pictures with the M&M and Freddy Cougar.

The Cleveland CIty Council met on Monday covering several items of business. The street condition survey and report was presented. Every section of road in the city was given a rating, with the average rode score being 68%. Approximately 354 miles of road is managed and maintained by the city, who would like to raise the average to 75%. Per-district scores were as follows: 1st district roads average score was 67%; 2nd district 59% which included alleys that are not traveled or worked on much, which lowers the score; 3rd district 68%; 4th district 66%; and 5th district 73%; Also announced at the meeting, city offices will be closed on Thursday, November 11th in observance of Veteran’s Day; Thursday, November 25th and Friday, November 26th for Thanksgiving; Thursday, December 23rd and Friday, December 24tth for Christmas, as well as Friday, December 31st and Monday, January 3rd for New Years.
