The Cleveland City Board of Education met Monday, covering several items of business. Director of Schools Dr. Russel Dyer gave several updates, including the fact that there are currently some job openings they seek to fill. Those can be found on the Human Resources website. Updates were given in regards to COVID-19. Numbers are trending downward. Temperature checks for students will be discontinued after the end of this school year. Cleveland City Schools encourages families to check temperatures at home, however. Also, for outdoor school sponsored events, masks will not be required. Also, a discussion was held proposing some changes to the entrance of the Jones Center Wrestling Complex as the trophy room has run out of space to adequately present trophies. The project was approved unanimously.

The Bradley County Commission met on Monday covering several items of business. Bradley County Mayor D. Gary Davis gave an update indicating COVID-19 numbers are down from last week, as are hospitalizations. Around 3,000 vaccinations were given out last week. Commissioner Slater announced that the Museum Center at Five Points will be burying a time capsule this summer, which will be opened in 25 years. They are asking 100 citizens to place something in the capsule. The time capsule is to commemorate Tennessee reaching 225 years of statehood. Submissions must be made by May 15th. The capsule will be closed and buried on June 3rd at 4:30PM. A motion was also made and passed to send a letter to Governor Bill Lee and the Bradley County Legislative Delegation requesting state aid for counties be included in the 2021-2022 budget.
Two days after a Soddy Daisy restaurant’s deck collapsed, sending eleven people to local hospitals, we’re learning the deck was installed without the proper permits. That’s according to the Hamilton County attorney.
Two were taken to the hospital with serious injuries, but a spokesperson for Erlanger says that they are improving.
The Hamilton County attorney’s office tells us that the deck was not built with a permit issued by the county, and it was a non-permitted modification to the structure.
The restaurant, which is closed on Mondays, is allowed to operate as long as customers are served inside only.
Around 4 o’clock Saturday afternoon emergency crews responded to Zois Restaurant at Harbor Lights Marina.
Forty people fell from the deck when it collapsed during a birthday party.
Zois reopened for business the day after the accident.
The Hamilton County attorney’s office says they contacted the operators of the restaurant and told them not to allow patrons to use the remaining portion of the deck left outside.
