In news today…

The Bradley County Commission met on Monday covering several items of business. A resolution was made for the bid for the new roof of the Courthouse Annex to go to Willoughby Roofing, who also did the Courthouse roofing. Another resolution was made for new terms to several Letters of Credit the county holds. These will be voted on next week. Discussion took place on the ambulance accident. Bradley County Mayor D. Gary Davis states the ambulance was totaled, but two new ones are coming this year which were already planned, and another that was out of service for repairs will be back in service soon. Commissioner Hughes noted that the landfill may not be accepting cash again, which will be looked into.

A 10-year-old had a firearm in his backpack at Middle Valley Elementary School Monday, according to the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO).

A release from Hamilton County Schools says the firearm was left in the child’s backpack at aftercare over the weekend.

A school safety officer recovered the firearm Monday morning, and turned it over to HCSO.

There’s no word on whether the student will face disciplinary action.

The Ocoee and Hiwassee Rivers in Tennessee are open for the recreation season despite a recent fire at the Ocoee Whitewater Center, officials said.

Polk County and the Hiwassee-Ocoee Scenic River State Park say the southeast Tennessee rivers are open for visitors.

The Middle Ocoee and Hiwassee are open for limited weekend trips, officials said. The Upper Ocoee began its full recreation schedule Saturday. The rivers offer canoeing, rafting, fishing, hiking and opportunities for nature photography.
