Tennessee Governor Bill Lee on Monday announced all Tennessee adults will be eligible for COVID-19 vaccination no later than April 5. Tennesseans aged 55 and older and those in Phase 2 of the state’s COVID-19 Vaccination Plan were eligible for COVID-19 vaccinations effective Mar. 18.

Governor Lee shared the announcement in a video Monday morning. By April 5, all Tennesseans age 16 and over will become eligible for COVID-19 vaccination. Eligibility for those in Phase 3 of the state’s COVID-19 Vaccination Plan will run concurrently with age-based eligibility. Phase 3 includes residents and staff members of congregate living facilities including college dormitories, group homes and shelters and those in the corrections system. Phase 3 also includes grocery store workers who were not eligible for vaccination based on previous age or risk-based categories. To help ensure vaccines are available to these populations, direct allocations of vaccines will be made to these facilities.

Tennessee’s Republican-led Statehouse gave final legislative approval Monday to a measure to ban transgender athletes from participating in girls’ sports, a measure many critics warn would likely result in costly legal challenges and be harmful to transgender youth.

House lawmakers voted 71-16 for the bill after little debate. The measure now goes to Republican Gov. Bill Lee’s desk. Lee has not explicitly promised he would sign the bill, but has said transgender athletes would “destroy women’s sports” and remarked that transgender athletes would put “a glass ceiling back over women that hasn’t been there in some time.”

According to Tennessee’s bill, student athletes would be required to prove that their sex matches that listed on the student’s “original” birth certificate in order to participate in public school sports in middle and high schools. If a birth certificate is unavailable, then the parents must provide another form of evidence “indicating the student’s sex at the time of birth.”

The Cleveland CIty Council met on Monday covering several items of business. City Manager Joe Fivas provided an update on the 25th and Ocoee Street intersection. He has been meeting with TDOT for months, discussing options on what each party wants to see. Both are state roads, so TDOT is responsible for maintenance of both. Lee University and the PIE Center bringing extra traffic into the area has made this project a priority. Also, a resolution was passed opposing the elimination of Cleveland as a Metropolitan Statistical Area, authorizing the Mayor to prepare and submit letters of opposition. These changes could affect how federal funds are allocated to cities such as Cleveland, Morristown, Dalton GA, and other areas.
