The Bradley County Commission met on Monday, covering several items of business. Bradley County Mayor D. Gary Davis gave an update on COVID-19 cases in Bradley County, indicating there were 58 active cases as of Friday. He was unsure about the 200+ cases that were previously reported by the local newspaper. Mayor Davis also introduced a team from Republic Services, including Matthew Dillard, General Manager. Dillard spoke on their acquisition of the county landfill and how they operate as a company. Some topics were discussed, including the endeavour with EnviroSuite for landfill monitoring, with further discussion to take place in the future. The Mayor presented a resolution to proceed with EnviroSuite negotiations, which passed. EMS Director Shawn Fairbanks made a presentation naming the new scholarships available to AEMTs for paramedic school in honor of retired Director of EMS, Danny Lawson. He and Lawson both spoke about the opportunity and what it means for both the county EMS and students who will be studying to become paramedics. We spoke with Mr. Fairbanks after the meeting.
New court documents show that the truck driver who was convicted in the 2015 crash that claimed the lives of six people, and his company, are asking the families to pay court costs in the June civil part of the case.
Benjamin Brewer was convicted of multiple counts of vehicular homicide by intoxication for causing the deadly Ooltewah crash on I-75 and was sentenced to 55 years in prison in 2018.
The company that hired Brewer, Cool Runnings Express, Inc., is also a defendant in the civil case.
They are asking the court to tax the costs of the June 2021 trial setting to the Plaintiffs, regardless of the ultimate jury verdict, according to documents obtained by Channel 3.
The costs would total $10,446.64.
Attorneys for Brewer and Cool Runnings Express have also asked the court to place sanctions against the plantiffs’ and/or their attorneys after a press release was reportedly sent out on the plaintiffs’ behalf.
The Hamilton County School Board has confirmed Dr. Nakia Towns as the district’s interim superintendent.
Board members on Monday night voted 5 to 3 for Dr. Towns to move into the position. Dr. Towns will take over when Dr. Bryan Johnson resigns on August 17th.
Dr. Towns is currently the deputy superintendent of the school district, a role she’s held since 2018.
Before that, she served in several leadership roles in education throughout the state.
