In news today…

Bradley County Schools would like to address the unsubstantiated social media threats that have been circulating through our district and districts nationwide. It is very unfortunate that this is the second correspondence to the BCS Community regarding the negative effects of social media in less than a month. The first communication was the harmful TikTok challenge and now false school violence threats through Snapchat. Unfortunately, social media is once again using our students to cause harm. We strongly urge parents to stay informed of the dangers of social media and what their children are exposed to through the different outlets.

The school district received the first Snapchat school social media threat Sunday evening and others followed Monday and Tuesday.  After working with the Bradley County Sheriff’s Office, it was determined that the threats were not credible and they originated from a School Threat group on Snapchat from another state. Snapchat users are invited to join the group and pull up the post to enter their respective school’s information. The students then have the option to screenshot and share to other outlets.

This happened in Bradley County and across the nation causing disruptions to the school day. As with any potential threat, BCS acted out of an abundance of caution and ensured extra safety measures were in place. A thorough investigation by the Bradley County Sheriff’s office is currently underway. All students related to posting the threats will be disciplined to the highest level.

In light of the negativity surrounding social media, Bradley County Schools will be conducting social media safety training for teachers, students and parents. The specifics will be communicated in the coming weeks.

On Wednesday, a student from Cleveland Middle School was detained by Cleveland Police for an alleged threat of having a gun while at school. A search was conducted and no weapon was found. However, the student was detained by the police for making a threat. The student will also receive discipline per board policy. Due to federal regulations regarding student privacy, Cleveland City Schools will not discuss actual student disciplinary actions.

Regarding the threat made Tuesday evening, no credible evidence was found to substantiate this threat. However, if you have any details regarding this or any other possible threat, please contact Cleveland Police at 423-476-7511.

In news today…

Around 7:30 am Tuesday, Lake Forest Middle School students and faculty began receiving screenshots of a social media threat towards their school with a specific location, time, and plan of action.

LFMS SRO Craig Frost immediately began a precautious investigation in an attempt to uncover the truth and protect the students and faculty of Lake Forest Middle School.

The Bradley County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Deputies also responded to Lake Forest to monitor the school, hallways, and classrooms while they resumed their normal schedule.

After multiple students were interviewed, it was discovered that the post was being shared by a 7th grader, who also admitted to sharing the post after screenshotting it from another social media app.

The juvenile was taken into custody and charged with False Reports. He is currently being held at the Bradley County Juvenile Detention Center, pending a detention hearing this week.

From the Cleveland Daily Banner…

Kaitlin Gebby reports: A fire was contained to the attic of Southern Heritage Bank on Wednesday, thanks to the Cleveland Fire Department.

At around 11 a.m., Cleveland firefighters were called to the bank building on Keith Street on reports of smoke coming from the attic. According to East Regional President Lee Stewart, employees smelled smoke first and suspected the HVAC unit in the attic was to blame.

What was originally thought to be just smoke from the unit was later confirmed to be a fire, according to a Cleveland Fire Department press release.

All were safely evacuated as the fire department made “an aggressive interior attack,” according to the press release.

Cleveland Fire Department’s Station 3 responded, which is just one lot away from the bank.

Southern Heritage Bank has not released information on its reopening of the Keith Street location.
