Cleveland City Schools has been awarded $1.5 million dollars through the Tennessee Department of Education’s “Epidemiology and Laboratory Capacity (ELC) COVID-19 Testing Grant.”

Cleveland City Schools plans to offer, but not mandate, intermittent testing for staff and students during the 2021-2022 school year. If a student or staff member has been exposed to someone that is positive with COVID-19 or exhibits multiple symptoms of COVID-19, they may qualify to be tested by a school nurse, walk-in clinic or mobile clinic site to be available by the fall of 2021. Parental consent will be required before any student testing would take place.

The mobile clinic will be equipped to perform free rapid and PCR tests. This clinic can be moved to schools which are seeing the highest number of cases to make it more accessible for students and staff. Also, the clinic will provide walk-in and drive-thru capabilities at multiple locations within our school community. The mobile clinic may also be used to provide an efficient mass testing site, if needed. Individual school nurses will also have the ability to perform rapid tests.

ELC funds will employ several positions for the 2021-2022 school year. A nurse will be hired to staff the mobile testing unit and perform PCR and rapid COVID tests for staff and students, organize mass testing events, if advised, and be available to provide COVID prevention education to students and staff throughout the district, as needed. Another position will be funded to provide a half-time Licensed Clinical Social Worker for the district.

Cleveland City Schools plans to provide testing, as needed, to students and staff as soon as August. More information will be provided to families once school begins in August.

A judge closed a hearing to the public on Wednesday over the license suspension of the migrant children facility in Chattanooga.

The state revoked their license last week after an employee was charged with sexual battery. The facility appealed the suspension and had a hearing in front of an administrative law judge.

The Tennessee Department of Children’s Services (DCS) filed two motions just before the hearing started to close the proceeding to the media and the public.

Attorneys representing the Baptiste Group, the facility housing migrant children in Chattanooga, argued they did not believe the meeting should be closed.

The judge sided with DCS, citing a Tennessee code that deals with confidentiality of records.
