Volkswagen fire investigators are trying to figure out what caused a production-halting fire Tuesday. A spokesperson for the local plant said they could release the cause as early as today.

The fire evacuated the entire plant for the rest of the day, but production picked back up Wednesday morning. Seven people were treated on-site with minor smoke inhalation.

Chattanooga fire officials said Tuesday the source was a conveyor belt that overheated and caught fire. The cause is being investigated internally by Volkswagen.

The facility was last inspected as recently as May, according to documents provided by OSHA.

Allen Mincey reports: Many may feel traffic on Sgt. Paul Huff Parkway is hard to maneuver during rush hours. Now, it appears it might be even more difficult as work on gas lines along the route will soon occur.

The Cleveland City Council on Monday approved a resolution approving Chattanooga Gas to work on a line on that major thoroughfare, with most of the work by the utility company being done between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. Most evening work would begin at 10 p.m., city council members were told.

The line installation had the blessing of the city’s Development and Engineering Department, and was approved due to the city’s obligation to work with Chattanooga Gas through a longstanding franchise agreement.

The project will include working on Paul Huff Parkway from Georgetown Road (State Route 60) to near the entrance to Bradley Square Mall.

No official date on the work on Paul Huff Parkway by the gas company was specified, though Fivas indicated it could begin as early as the fall. Chattanooga Gas will not be able to start the work until it gets the go-ahead by the city.
