Kaitlin Gebby reports: Cleveland High School soon might get a makeover.

The Cleveland City Schools’ Site Committee on Tuesday heard a proposal for a new entrance to the high school and a renovated wing for career and technical education courses.

The new entrance is designed to “create a presence” for the high school, said Brian Templeton of Upland Design. Templeton premiered a rendering of the design during the meeting, which showed steps leading up to what looks like a two-story entryway with all-glass walls, outlined by columns.

The addition of stairs wouldn’t remove a wheelchair entrance to the school. Instead, it would be located on the side of the three-sided glass-box vestibule.

Templeton said the new entryway design holds “a lot of potential with the graphics” to “create an identity” — something he said Cleveland City Schools does consistently well.

The Cleveland/Bradley Chamber of Commerce is set to host its 96th Annual Meeting on Thursday, Jan. 27, and present the M.C. Headrick Free Enterprise and the Robert W. Varnell Jr. Leadership Awards.

The event will be held at 6:30 pm. at Westmore Church of God.

The gathering, to be held in celebration of the previous year’s accomplishments, also reveals the honorees receiving both awards.

The Headrick Award is the chamber’s highest and most prestigious award and is for focusing on the free enterprise system and to honor the memory of one of the most outstanding businessman the chamber says Cleveland and Bradley County has ever produced.

Larry McDaniel of The Town Squire, 2021 recipient of the Headrick Award, will present the honor to this year’s recipient.

In 2021, Beecher Hunter of Life Care Centers of America was honored with the Varnell Award, in memory of Robert W. Varnell Jr., for his demonstrated leadership in professional, religious and civic endeavors.

Hunter will present the award to the 2022 recipient.

Attendance will be limited. Hand sanitizer will be provided throughout the venue and masks are optional.

The registration deadline is Friday, Jan. 21. Members who wish to use available admission credits should call the Chamber office to make reservations. To register to attend the annual meeting, visit Clevelandchamber.com and select the event on the Community Calendar, or call the Chamber at 423-472-6587.
