From the Cleveland Daily Banner…

Tim Siniard reports: The 86-year-old former Bradley County Jail, which took approximately a year to finance and build, was reduced to rubble in just under an hour Friday night. The demolition began at 6 p.m.

The former jail, which was constructed as a New Deal project on Second Street in 1935, served as the county jail for approximately 50 years until it was acquired by First Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

The church plans to utilize the new space for extra parking spaces, as well as other improvements such as a green space.

Ray Stephens, a project manager for the Charleston-based Pro Builders Unlimited, told the Cleveland Daily Banner the razing of the structure, which was conducted by Wright Brothers Construction, took about an hour.

On Saturday, workers at the site were operating heavy machinery to separate wood, steel, brick and concrete, which will be hauled to three locations today.

The Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development (TNECD) announced today the recipients of Tennessee Historic Development Grants.

Approved by the Tennessee General Assembly in April 2021, the program provides more than $4 million to projects that aim to renovate and preserve historic buildings across the state. The program encourages communities and private developers to invest in buildings that have contributed to a community’s history but now sit idle. These buildings can once again contribute to the economy through job creation and commercial opportunities.

The grants provide 30 percent of the funding for the building rehabilitation up to $300,000. This $4 million investment of state funds will leverage more than $14 million in private investment.

In Cleveland, Berry Properties received $62,400 to rehabilitate the Tipton-Fillauer House, and Case Enterprises received $300,000 to rehabilitate the Sanda Hosiery Mills.
