A search and rescue effort for a missing hiker in Rhea County came to a tragic end Saturday afternoon as authorities shifted to a recovery operation.

After 11 days of canvassing the Pocket Wilderness area, Rhea County Detective Rocky Potter confirmed crews had located the body of Curtis Dustin Williams, who hadn’t been seen since May 10. Williams’ body was found near the Morgan Springs area.

According to authorities, Williams, an experienced hiker from North Carolina, went hiking with a dog on May 10. The dog was found just three days later. On Saturday, rope and rescue teams had to assist in making the recovery of Williams’ body due to the extreme terrain where he was found.

It’s still unclear what caused Williams’ death. When asked how he was found, officials were unable to provide additional details.
