Officials with the Hamilton County Health Department have reported the first case of the omicron variant.

It comes just a couple of days after the first cases were reported in Tennessee and Georgia.

The state of Tennessee reported two cases of the variant for the first time on Saturday in Shelby County, TN.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said early data suggested that omicron is doubling every two days, making it more transmissible than previous strains.

For more than a year, scientists at the Athena Esoterix lab have been processing positive COVID-19 samples to check for mutations and possible variants in Hamilton County.

Health officials say one of those samples was sent off earlier this week. It was confirmed to be positive by Thursday morning.
