Topping our news today, from CNN…

Richard DeVos, the co-founder of Amway, died Thursday. His death, at age 92, was announced by his grandson Rick. He died at his home in Ada, Michigan, near Amway’s headquarters. The cause was complications from an infection.

DeVos had been president of Amway from its 1959 founding until he retired in 1993. His son Doug DeVos has served as president of Amway since 2002. He was also the father-in-law of Betsy DeVos, the US education secretary.

DeVos was one of the top contributors to Lee University, with the tennis center and recreation center bearing his name. Lee President, Dr. Paul Conn, wrote a biography of DeVos and Amway co-founder Jay Van Andel, The Possible Dream, in 1976.

From the Cleveland Daily Banner…

A variety of country music will lead up to the performance of Craig Wayne Boyd — Season 7 winner of “The Voice” — as Saturday’s headliner for the seventh annual International Cowpea Festival and Cook-off presented by Bush Brothers & Company.

The popular celebration will be held in Charleston Park.

The festival kicks off at 10 a.m. with activities throughout the day. Leading up to Boyd’s performance, live music begins at 11 a.m., with a full lineup slated for the day, beginning with the old-time country sounds of Uncle Hershel’s Favorite. Then, Cotter Hill will perform his fresh new country sounds that just earned him the “Nashville’s Next” title.  Cool Mule Revival is a bluegrass band featuring what has been described as “amazing” musicianship. Monday Night Social offers an alternative country sound, including their song set to be featured on CMT. And Just Us Bluegrass is a longtime regional favorite with a faithful following of their bluegrass and country music.

Craig Wayne Boyd will take the stage at 6 p.m. for this free concert. The headliner show is sponsored by the Chamber and the Tennessee Arts Commission. Organizers say festival-goers should bring chairs and plan to stay all day to enjoy activities for every age, great festival food from more than a dozen food vendors and the Whirlpool Cowpea Cook-off.

Proceeds from the festival fund the operations of the Hiwassee River Heritage Center, which opened in May 2013, and is located on Highway 11 in Charleston. The Heritage Center is currently closed for expansion and is set to reopen in December.

On the City Council, he served as vice mayor alongside a longtime friend, Mayor Tom Rowland. The two were also colleagues on the Cleveland Board of Public Utilities, until Lyle stepped down.

From the Chattanooga Times Free Press…

A planned Oct. 1 Chattanooga debate between U.S. Senate Republican nominee Marsha Blackburn and Democratic nominee Phil Bredesen has fallen through after Blackburn’s campaign said the Brentwood, Tennessee member of Congress won’t be attending.

The Oct. 1 debate is the second that Blackburn has turned down in the Nov. 6 match-up with Bredesen, a former Tennessee governor and one-time Nashville mayor. The race is being nationally watched because its outcome could influence the balance of the Senate.
