In news today…

On Thursday morning, Bradley County 911 was notified by a Tennova employee regarding a threat.  Tennova security had been alerted of a post on Facebook written by Jordan Hughes that stated – “ I bet Whirlpool will remember my name if I shoot the place up”. The statement was posted on Jordan Hughes’s Facebook timeline Thursday morning sometime between midnight and 5:00 a.m. Jordan Hughes is currently in custody for terroristic threats and harassment. Whirlpool security and staff have also been advised of this incident.

Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam said Thursday that he won’t run for the U.S. Senate seat being opened with the retirement of his fellow Republican Bob Corker.

Haslam had been holding out hope that Corker, a close family friend, would run for a third term in the Senate, and didn’t begin to seriously consider his own bid until he learned otherwise.

A statement from Haslam said he wants to focus on his remaining time as governor.

Haslam was first elected governor in 2010 and can’t run again next year because of term limits. His vast personal wealth and popularity in the state would have given other Republicans contenders pause had he decided to run for Senate.

Republican U.S. Rep. Marsha Blackburn is launching her bid for the U.S. Senate on the heels of Gov. Bill Haslam’s decision to sit out the race to succeed retiring Sen. Bob Corker.

Blackburn described herself in her campaign announcement Thursday as a “hard-core, card-carrying Tennessee conservative” and decried the Republican majority in the Senate for failing to repeal former President Barack Obama’s health care law.

Blackburn was first elected the Congress in 2002 and has been a regular guest on political talk shows on TV. She made a name for herself as a state lawmaker for opposing a fellow Republican governor’s bid to introduce a state income tax.

Blackburn said she supports President Donald Trump’s proposal to build a wall on the border with Mexico.

The primary election in May will see the first use of electronic poll books, but future elections using this type of voting process will be dependent on funding being approved.

The Bradley County Election Commission met Monday to discuss the elections that will occur in May, August and November 2018, and discussed the use of the electronic method of voting in those elections. However, only the May primary will definitely be using these poll books.

That will be done at no cost by a company — MicroVote — that proposed the electronic method of voting for Bradley County. The company has agreed to loan Bradley County the proper equipment for that vote.

However, after that, there will be a cost associated with the program, including not only the equipment but a maintenance agreement.

The maintenance agreement is one of the reasons the Bradley County Commission did not approve funding for the program during budget hearings this summer. A suggested was that funding might be possible beginning in the 2018 fiscal year in phases.

The election commission did discuss whether to have the electronic poll book process at only one precinct, but instead agreed unanimously to it being tested at all 17 precincts.
