From the Chattanoogan…

Former Lee University Campus Choir Director James “Jimmy” Phillips was arrested on rape charges Monday.  Prior to his arrest, Phillips resigned as director of Campus Choir on Sept. 17, Lee officials said. According to Dr. William Green, dean of the School of Music, Phillips cited “personal reasons” as his motivation to resign.

The Lee University Office of Public Relations released a statement that said they have cooperated fully with the investigation and aren’t at liberty to publicly discuss the matter at this time.

Phillips has been the director of Campus Choir for 13 years, having begun his Lee career in 2007. Assistant Professor of Music Dr. Luke Gambill stepped into the role of director after Phillip’s resignation.

Phillips was placed under $25,000 bond at the Bradley County Jail.

Cleveland City Schools Director Russell Dyer issued an apology for a Cleveland High School teacher’s rivalry week outfit.

A picture shared shows the teacher dressed up for the “Beat Bradley” day ahead of the big football game against Bradley Central High School, depicting the competition by wearing overalls, holding a baby doll and cigarette.

Dyer stated the picture brought to his attention “clearly does not meet our expectations of behavior for professional employees”:

He stated the school system and Board of Education do not condone this type of behavior and an investigation is ongoing by the Human Resources department. If discipline is warranted, Board Policies 5.200 or 5.201 will be followed.

A death row inmate in Tennessee died Wednesday of “apparent natural causes,” state officials said.

On Thursday, the state Department of Correction announced that 50-year-old Marlon Kiser was pronounced dead the night before at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville.

The department says Kiser’s cause of death is pending determination by the medical examiner.

Officials say there have been no COVID-19 cases in Kiser’s assigned housing unit. The state says there have been 74 confirmed cases at the facility, and all those who have tested positive to date have recovered.

Kiser was sentenced to death in the 2001 deadly shooting of Hamilton County Sheriff’s Deputy Donald Kenneth Bond Jr. in Chattanooga.
