A patient set fire to his clothing and bedding in a room in the emergency department at Tennova Healthcare in Cleveland early Thursday morning, setting off the sprinkler system, according to the fire department.

The incident happened around 3:30 a.m., according to Cleveland Fire Marshall Ben Atchley.

He said a patient suffering from psychiatric issues used a lighter to set fire to his clothing and bedding. The sprinker system activated, and emergency room staffers and security personnel used a dry fire extinguisher to put out the flames.

No one was injured in the fire, but there was “quite a bit of smoke and a bit of a cleanup,” Atchley said.

He credited quick action by security and hospital personnel with preventing the flames from spreading.

The hospital closed a section of the emergency department, Atchley said, but the overall unit remained open and is accepting patients.

Water/Wastewater Manager Craig Mullinax informed the Cleveland Board of Public Utilities recently that the Tennessee Department of Economic and Conservation has approved the utility’s overflow pump station modifications.

Design of the $65,000-plus project is now 100 percent complete, following the submission to state officials, and return of the approval. The bid for construction went to J.R. Wauford & Company, Consulting Engineers Inc., also called JRWCO.

A number of projects continue to progress with the utility’s broad wastewater rehabilitation program. Rehabilitation of basins 31-45 and 10-36 is complete, as well as rehabilitation on Wildwood and Inman.

Other ongoing projects include long-term flow monitoring and capacity assurance, sewer maintenance and clearing, basins 10A-8, phase 3 of rehabilitation on basins 31-45 and 10-36, and the Candies Creek force main replacement.

Other projects have been completed at the Cleveland filter plant, and Waterville water plant.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office is seeking two individuals implicated in two burglaries in that county.

According to information supplied on the law enforcement agency’s Facebook page, they are a man and woman who were photographed possibly taking items from a vehicle.

Polk County Sheriff Steve Ross said this morning the incidents occurred near cabins close to Parksville Lake.

The agency has received some calls asking if two alleged burglars were missing 15-year old high school student Elizabeth Thomas and her reported abductor, 50-year-old former teacher Tad Cummins. Ross said that while the identities of the two suspects are still being sought, he could say that the two are not the missing pair from the Columbia area, who are mentioned in an Amber alert sent out all over the nation.

If you have any information as to the identity of the two alleged burglars, please contact the Polk County Sheriff’s Office at 423-338-4540. Your identity will remain anonymous, according to the agency’s Facebook page.
