Topping our news today…

Visitation and a funeral service for Bradley County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Deputy Lucy will be held today. The visitation and service will take place at Michigan Avenue Elementary School, located at 188 Michigan Avenue School Road, in Cleveland. Visitation will be from 11AM until 1PM, with the funeral service beginning at 1PM. Shortly after the funeral, a processional will leave the school and travel to Faithful Friend Pet Crematory, where Lucy will be cremated. Her remains will be returned tomorrow to her K–9 handler, Patrol Deputy Chris Shope.

Sheriff’s office personnel along with other first-responder agencies will transport the body of Lucy to and from the funeral service. The processional will leave Faithful Friend Pet Crematory at 10:30AM, travel south on Ocoee Street, turn left on Inman street, and proceed onto Highway 64. The processional will then turn left onto Durkee Road, right onto Benton Pike, and then left onto Michigan Avenue School Road. The processional will travel the same route, but in reverse order, back to Faithful Friend Pet Crematory after the funeral service.

The public is encouraged to line the processional route to pay tribute to the K-9 deputy sheriff. However, please use caution and common sense when parking and standing along public roadways.

Also in news today…

The City of Cleveland is inviting the public to discuss and provide input on the city’s newly developed parks and recreation master plan. The master plan is utilized to guide the development and re-development of the City’s recreational facilities and assets.

The information meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 20, 2017 at the Cleveland/Bradley Public Library located at 795 Church Street, Cleveland. Parks and Recreation staff and city officials are excited to discuss the future of the City’s recreational facilities and receive feedback from the community.

Cleveland State Community College officials are still waiting to see when they will be able to accept new students into the college’s nursing program again.

The nursing students who graduated from the college in May are preparing to take their state licensure exams this summer. If the pass rate is at an acceptable level, the college could launch new nursing cohorts in January 2018.

In 2016, the Tennessee Board of Nursing ordered the college to suspend admission into its nursing program. This was due to a problem with the first-time pass rates of Cleveland State nursing graduates testing for licensure.

The state board requires colleges with nursing programs to make sure at least 85 percent of their graduates are able to pass the National Council Licensure Examination, or NCLEX, on their first try. Only 82 percent of Cleveland State’s graduates did so in 2015, which was the final straw leading to the state board’s 2016 ruling.

Since the ruling, Cleveland State has been working with its existing nursing students to make sure they pass.

This May, Cleveland State had 43 nursing graduates. All 43 passed the predictive tests, and most are expected to take the NCLEX this summer.

The Tennessee Board of Nursing will be looking at Cleveland State’s status again in August. Seymour said the hope is that this summer’s test-takers will help the college once again reach the 85 percent mark.

With the program still in limbo, Cleveland State is still unable to accept new students into its nursing program this fall.

Dr. Bill Seymour, President of Cleveland State, did, however, point out that the college is enrolling pre-nursing students. To be accepted into the nursing program at Cleveland State, students must first complete prerequisite courses as pre-nursing students.

Thanks to a partnership with Chattanooga State Community College, a group of pre-nursing students from Cleveland State has been admitted into Chattanooga State’s nursing program for this fall.
