Topping our news today…

A judge from the Nashville area has been assigned in the case against Bradley County Sheriff Eric Watson.

Judge Don Ash from Rutherford County confirmed he has been named the special judge.

The sheriff’s office said prosecutors presented evidence against Watson to a grand jury on Wednesday, but it’s still not clear what charges he may face.

Possible misuse of county credit cards and alleged abuse of power are some of the allegations facing Sheriff Eric Watson.

Bradley County’s District Attorney General Steve Crump recused himself because Watson contributed to his run for office.

The sheriff’s attorney, James Logan, said Watson did nothing illegal. It’s not clear if the grand jury chose to charge Watson.

From the Cleveland Daily Banner…

The second cyclist in less than a week died following a wreck Wednesday in Polk County.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol reported the accident occurred at 9:22 a.m. on Wednesday on U.S. Highway 411 at Grove Road, just north of Benton.

Trooper Larry Fowler, who investigated the accident, said that the cyclist who died in the wreck was Colby T. Smith, 19, of Cleveland. He was operating a 2017 Yamaha, and was northbound on the highway.

The other motorist was identified as Norma H. Baine of Old Fort, who was also traveling north on U.S. Highway 411. She was driving a 2004 Ford pickup truck.

The THP’s Fowler explained that Baine was in the left lane of traffic, and Smith in the right lane, of the four-lane highway. He said Baine did not see Smith, who the trooper said was traveling at a high rate of speed, when Baine attempted to turn right onto Grove Road. Smith reportedly struck the front of Baine’s truck, and was thrown from the cycle onto the road, where he also struck a road sign.

Smith was transported from the scene of the accident to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. No charges were placed against Baine in the incident, and she reportedly did not sustain any injuries in the accident.

From WRCB Channel 3…

Johnthony Walker’s attorney says he’s never been in trouble before and should be allowed to serve a sentence outside of jail.

Meanwhile, the district attorney is pushing for more charges.

Tears streamed down the faces of the people who loved the Woodmore bus crash victims most. They listened as the district attorney announced he has new evidence in the case that he hopes lead to  more charges against Walker.  As more charges are considered, Walker’s attorney is hopeful her client can avoid jail time on all the charges he’s facing.  She’s asking for a diversion or an alternative sentencing program, that applies to Class C felonies, like the one Walker is facing.

Dunn said if the request is granted, Walker would plead guilty but a judgment would not go on his record if he completes things like probation or community service. The defense in the Woodmore case will present their case for a diversion on August 10th. It will be up to a judge to decide if one is granted.
