A Tennessee lawmaker hopes to help people clear their names faster after being charged with minor crimes.
Rep. Harold Love of Nashville introduced House Bill 134 that would allow people convicted of misdemeanor charges like theft or DUI to have their record wiped clean three years after serving their sentence.
The law currently requires those individuals to wait five years, the same amount of time for a felony.
Rep. Love said this change could help people trying to get employment or housing.
The bill heads to the subcommittee next week.
If adopted, it would go into effect July 1.

Patrick John Hayes, a former Varnell police officer, pleaded guilty to sexual battery charges in court earlier this week.
Conasauga Judicial District Attorney Bert Poston says in exchange for the guilty plea, Hayes was sentenced to 12 months probation and ordered to pay a $500 fine, plus court costs.
The agreement says Hayes must not have any contact with the victim, and must surrender his law enforcement certification, which he already had done.
He must now not seek or accept employment in law enforcement, and he must complete sexual harassment training.

The labor statistics for December are in. The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for the United States was 3.5%, the same as November, and down from 3.9% one year ago. The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for Tennessee was 3.3%, the same as November, and the same as one year ago.
Moving closer to home, in Bradley County the unemployment rate was 3.2%, up from 3.1% in November, and up from 2.9% one year ago. McMinn County was at 3.8%, up from 3.5% in November, and up from 3.5% one year ago. Meigs County was at 5.4%, up from 3.9% in November, and up from 4% one year ago. Polk County’s unemployment rate was at 3.9%, up from 3.4% in November, and up from 3.5% one year ago. Rhea County was at 5.5%, up from 4.7% in November, and up from 5.1% one year ago. Hamilton County’s unemployment rate was 3.1%, up from 3% in November, and up from 2.9% one year ago.
