Tim Siniard reports: State Sen. Mike Bell (R-Riceville), who represents the 9th Senatorial District, has been reappointed to chair the powerful Senate Judiciary Committee for the 112th General Assembly, according to an announcement by Tennessee Lt. Gov.  Randy McNally on Wednesday.

McNally, who was also re-elected Speaker of the Senate on Tuesday, praised his fellow members and said the Senate is “made up of some of the smartest and strongest leaders with whom he’s had the privilege to serve.”

He said Bell’s “commitment to judicial accountability and the rule of law” was well-known and well-established.

In addition, Bell, who was elected to the state senate in 2010, will also be serving on the Government Operations Committee.

Wednesday’s announcement marks Bell’s second time as Judiciary Committee chairman. He was first appointed to that role during the 111th General Assembly.

Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee on Thursday announced special session legislation addressing learning loss for students across the state as schools continue to navigate inside and outside of the classroom amid the pandemic.

“COVID-19 has disrupted every aspect of education and we are on the cusp of severe consequences for our students if we don’t act now,” Gov. Lee said in a press release.

The governor said data shows Tennessee third graders are facing “an estimated 50% drop in reading proficiency and a projected 65% drop in math proficiency.”

Lee said the loss is “not an acceptable path for our kids.”
