From the Cleveland Daily Banner…

Mayor Tom Rowland said Wednesday that land is being made available around the Exit 20 area of Interstate 75 that could host magnets which would draw people to the city of Cleveland and Bradley County.

Rowland scrapped his usual “State of the City” remarks planned for the Civitan Club after receiving news of the passing of the Rev. Billy Graham.

But after giving his recollections of the famous minister, Rowland said this would likely be his last time speaking to the club as mayor, and he gave an annotated version including a couple of details about the Exit 20 area that have not been previously discussed.

The mayor spoke of the 200 acres of commercial and retail property at the exit which is being developed by Chattanooga developer Larry Armour.

He had previously mentioned he knew of two major hotels that will locate there, but again did not name the specific companies involved.

The mayor then mentioned the developer is offering land for two potentially major projects.

Also from The Banner…

The Cleveland Metropolitan Planning Organization voted Wednesday to request public comment with a public hearing and vote on a modification to the improvements scheduled for Highway 60. And, the project will be now be entirely under the Cleveland/Bradley County umbrella.

The Highway 60 project was originally designed from Hopewell to State Route 58, widened to five lanes, and to be 5.9 miles in length. The changes include lengthening the improvement area to 6.5 miles, and instead of widening from two to three lanes, there will be “corridor improvements where various sections will feature improvements including 3-lane sections, passing lanes, 12-foot travel lanes, 8-foot shoulders and resurfacing.”

The cost of the project will also increase from $21 million to $30 million.

The project could take a little more than two years to complete, especially since there is a creek bridge to build as part of the improved route. The MPO is next scheduled to meet March 28, where a public hearing and vote will take place.

From NewsChannel 9…

Eight days after a gunman killed 17 people at a Florida high school, school systems here at home are talking about school safety.

Leaders in Bradley County met behind closed doors Thursday afternoon discussing how to prevent similar tragedies from happening there.

Bradley is one of several counties in our area who have seen threats made to schools days after the Parkland shooting.
