From the Cleveland Daily Banner…

Christy Armstrong reports: Cleveland State Community College this year began the construction of its first new building in 45 years, a historic occasion which tied for No. 5 on the Cleveland Daily Banner’s list of Top 10 Newsmakers of 2019.

College faculty, staff, students and many special guests gathered on campus to  celebrate an official groundbreaking of CSCC’s new Health and Science Center on Aug. 28.

The new building will be near the intersection of Adkisson Drive and Norman Chapel Road, across from the college’s administration building, on what was formerly a parking lot.

The Health and Science Center will be the main space for students taking classes within the college’s nursing, medical assisting, paramedic and other health-related degree and certificate programs. It will also include spaces for biology and microbiology students.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) says a three-car crash in Polk County on Christmas night claimed the life of one man and injured six others, including two children.

The THP says the accident happened just after 9:30 p.m. on Highway 411, about a mile south of the Cajun Lady restaurant.

An accident report says 73-year-old Adan Chapa of Chatsworth was traveling south when his vehicle stalled in the roadway.

The THP says the vehicle had no lights on when Chapa got out and tried to see what was wrong.

A total of six people were hurt, including a 6-year-old child and a 10-year-old child from Cleveland, who were in the third car that was hit head-on. The driver of the second vehicle that rear-ended Chapa’s vehicle is from Ellijay, Georgia.
