Topping our news today…

The Tennessee Department of Education has released district and school level data and status designations for the 2018-2019 school year. Director of Bradley County Schools, Dr. Linda Cash, stated, “I am very pleased to let you know that Bradley County Schools has been given the performance determination of Advancing. This designation means that we are meeting our growth expectations that were set by TDOE. This is the 2nd consecutive year that we have achieved this status.”

Cash also stated, “Bradley County Schools is ecstatic to have three schools that received Reward Status for the 2018-2019 school year.” Those schools were Michigan Avenue Elementary School, North Lee Elementary School, and Oak Grove Elementary School.

Cleveland City Schools also announced they were an Advancing district as measured by the TDOE. This designation stems from TCAP testing in grades 3-11 which took place during the 2018-19 school year. Advancing is the second highest designation in the state. Furthermore, the district is a Level 4 Tennessee Value-Added Assessment System school system according to TDOE for that same testing cycle.

Director of Schools Dr. Russel Dyer stated, “Our goal is to ensure each student is prepared to be college, career, and life ready by the time they graduate from our system.  I’m proud of what we have accomplished, but we have more to do. We will celebrate our favorable results and continue to find ways to help each student find success in our district.”

A woman was killed Wednesday afternoon when the car she was a passenger in was involved in a crash with a McMinn County Sheriff’s patrol car.

Sheriff Joe Guy says Deputy Ashley McClendon was traveling south on Congress Parkway in Athens when another vehicle, driven by 60-year-old Frankie Greer, turned in front of the deputy, causing the collision.

A crash report from the Tennessee Highway Patrol says the impact from the collision caused Greer’s car to spin-out, ejecting the passenger, 56-year-old Linda Greer, before landing on top of her in a ditch.

The report says Greer was not wearing a seat belt.

Sheriff Guy says Deputy McClendon and Frankie Greer received minor injuries. Both were treated at Starr Athens.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
