Topping our news today…

Early voting ended on Thursday, and the most voters in at least eight years went to the early polls. The Bradley County Election Commission reports that 9,632 people voted early, the most since at least 2006 for this comparable election. 997 people voted early on Thursday.

Election day on Tuesday, May 1st, is the final chance to vote. The polls open at 8 AM and close at 8 PM on Tuesday at the 17 Bradley County precincts. Also in news today…

On Wednesday, April 25th, Lee University awarded nine incoming freshman the 2018 Rymer Scholarship. Three Gold Scholars, three Silver Scholars, and three Bronze Scholars were presented at the annual Rymer Scholars banquet on Lee’s campus.

This year’s Rymer Gold scholars are Emily Harris (BCHS), Haley Jones (WVHS), and Tyler Massey (CHS). They each will receive a scholarship of $10,000.

The 2018 Rymer Silver scholars are Brandon Akiona (WVHS), Cassidy Jones (CHS), and Jasmine Ngo (WVHS). They will each receive a scholarship of $5,000.

The Rymer Bronze scholars are Jonathan Brewer (CHS), Ethan Miles (CHS), and Ashley Sims (BCHS). They each will receive a scholarship of $2,000.

Wacker Polysilicon North America officials announced Thursday the Charleston plant has safely resumed operations for the production of polysilicon.

Using a phase-in approach, Wacker has begun the initial start-up of the site, starting with distillation.

Production of polysilicon at the Charleston plant had been suspended since September 7th, 2017, when a mechanical failure due to a fractured compressor piston caused an explosion.

Cleveland Police Officer Bryson Riggs responded to a stolen property offense occurring at 1211 South Lee Highway S.W. on Saturday at 6:29 p.m.

An anonymous caller stated a man on a sports bike motorcycle was driving recklessly and had illegal narcotics.

When Riggs pulled into the parking lot at the Crown Inn, he made contact with the suspect, Alex Longwell, who was standing by the Kawasaki sports bike.

After officers ran a check on the bike, 911 dispatch advised the bike was stolen.

Longwell was detained for possession of stolen property.

Upon searching Longwell, two baggies of a crystal-like substance appearing to be methamphetamine were found in his pocket, reports stated. The methamphetamine baggies reportedly weighed approximately 7.0 and 9.0 grams, respectively. Fourteen syringes were also found in a bag on the bike. The victim was notified his motorcycle was recovered and responded to the scene.

Longwell was  placed in custody, and transported to the Bradley County Justice Center.

He was charged with possession of stolen property and possession of methamphetamine for resale.

It’s that time of the month again — the labor force estimates for March are in! The seasonally adjusted US unemployment rate for March was 4.1%, the same as one month prior, and down from 4.5% one year ago. The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for Tennessee was 3.4%, which is the same as one month prior, and the same as one year ago.

Moving closer to home, the unemployment rate for Bradley County was 3.5%, down from 3.6% in February, and down from 4.1% one year ago. For Polk County, the unemployment rate was 4.2%, down from 4.6% in February, and down from 5% one year ago.
