From NewsChannel 9: The Dalton Municipal Airport is expanding its aircraft hangars.

The Dalton City Council voted 3-0 Monday to accept a $3-million dollar contract with the Georgia Department of Transportation for expansion at the Dalton Municipal Airport for new aircraft hangars.

The airport currently has 27 hangars but there is a waiting list of aircraft owners looking to lease a hangar.

The City Council passed a resolution in Dec. 2022 requesting $2.25 million in state funding to assist in hangar development.

The General Assembly granted this request during the 2023 Legislative Session and included the funding in the AFY22 State Budget.

The monies will be allocated through Georgia Department of Transportation and require $750,000 in local match funding.

Mayor David Pennington said the funds needed to match the grant money from the state is available because the city had extra tax revenues.

“I think we determined that our match is going to come from our overages in sales tax collections that are above our budget,” Pennington said.

The project still has to go through a design process but is expected to hold 21 aircraft.
