The Bradley County School Board met last night. The meeting started with a moment of silence for Brittany and Dustin Dillard, the couple killed in the Christmas Day car crash on Highway 64. Brittany Dillard was a teacher at Walker Valley High School.
Director of Schools, Dr. Linda Cash, thanked the Bradley County Sheriff’s Office for their help in partnering with the system to provide school safety and specifically for assistance with an investigation that found a reported threat to Ocoee Middle School to be false.
The Bradley County School Board was awarded as a Tennessee School Board Association School Board of Distinction. The award is based on the four areas of planning, policy, promotion, and board development.
The Board passed a resolution asking state lawmakers to change Tennessee’s 3rd Grade Retention law passed in 2021. Under Tennessee law, the main determining factor on whether a child is retained in 3rd grade is their proficiency on the state TCAP test in English Language Arts. The resolution requests the general assembly to amend the state law to include other factors such as benchmark tests, teacher and parent input, and other subjects such as math, science, and social studies. Dr. Linda Cash stated she felt the decision should be in the hands of the local district and based on all school district information available.
The board also approved a contract with ABM for Janitorial work at the PIE Center. The board received 2 bids and accepted the lowest bid from ABM for $131,621.
Schools will be closed on January 16th for MLK Day.
The next school board meeting is on February 9th.
